Tim Cahill- Still A Democrat!
Wednesday, July 08, 2009
In today's Boston Globe, State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill says "I just feel like I don't fit" in the Democratic Party as he declares himself unenrolled. The Massachusetts Republican Party says: "Tim, you're still a perfect fit!" Just review Cahill's shady and dubious ethics record as part of the establishment...The trademark characteristic of a Beacon Hill Democrat:
Tim Cahill solicited political money from businesses doing business with the Treasury: "A conference series run by Massachusetts state Treasurer Timothy Cahill with the goal of helping women manage their finances is raising ethical questions, not because of the subject matter, but because its high-dollar sponsors have a strong interest in currying favor with Cahill. State Street Corp., Bank of America, and Barclays Bank are among the corporate sponsors that contribute $5,000 to $25,000 each - collectively up to $200,000 a year - which allows Cahill to operate the conferences and simultaneously raise his political profile. But the same financial institutions that underwrite the sessions also earn millions of dollars in fees from Cahill's office by handling the state's bond offerings or investing the state's pension fund." ("Conference aid called ethics issue for Cahill," Boston Globe, 6/1/09) Tim Cahill’s Quincy neighbor and longtime friend lobbied for a company that was bidding on state lottery contracts, which Cahill controls:
"The Massachusetts Lottery, which is overseen by Cahill, awarded a $21 million contract to Georgia-based scratch ticket maker Scientific Games in 2004. At that time, Cahill's political supporter and fundraiser, Thomas Kelly, was receiving about $132,000 in consulting fees from Scientific Games." ("Mass. Treasurer Cleared by Ethics Probe, AP, 4/23/09)
Tim Cahill hit Massachusetts taxpayers with up to $300,000 in legal bills to defend a federal civil suit against him:
"Massachusetts taxpayers will pay up to $300,000 for outside lawyers to defend a federal civil suit against state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill because the state attorney general's office declined to handle the case, citing potential conflicts with two state investigations, according to officials involved in the case. The state Lottery Commission, which is led by Cahill, this month authorized hiring the two law firms, Proskauer Rose LLP and Mintz Levin, to fight a $20 million suit brought by a Rhode Island-based gaming firm, Bingo Innovative Software. Bingo Innovative Software is alleging that Cahill and Lottery director Mark J. Cavanagh conspired in a ``pay-to-play'' scheme in which a national competitor, Scientific Games, was awarded lottery contracts as a result of its fund-raising activities for Cahill. Tim Cahill voted on inflated pensions when he was Norfolk County Treasurer:
"A longtime political supporter and fund-raiser for state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill is collecting the kind of lucrative pension typically reserved for public safety personnel such as police and prison guards, even though she held administrative jobs in the Norfolk County sheriff's office. Cahill voted to approve the hazardous duty pension for Josephine E. Shea in 2000, while he was still Norfolk County treasurer and chairman of the Norfolk County Retirement Board, according to public records. Shea, who retired that year at age 49, has been collecting a pension now worth $47,000 a year, plus health-care insurance, paid by Norfolk county taxpayers. If she had received the kind of pension usually given to sheriff's department administrators, instead of the type Norfolk corrections officers get for their potentially dangerous jobs, her pension would be worth less than half that, $21,230 a year." ("Cahill voted to double supporter's pension," Boston Globe, 6/10/09)
