MA GOP RESPONSE TO PATRICK ENDORSEMENT: “IT’S PANIC TIME FOR ELIZABETH WARREN”

BOSTON – Today, Nate Little, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Republican Party, issued the following statement on Governor Patrick’s endorsement:

“It is a sign of deep panic and desperation in the Warren campaign that Governor Patrick was trotted out today to break his word and endorse her in advance of the Democratic convention.”

Governor Patrick Previously Said He Was “Staying Out Of Contested Primaries”

In May 2011, Governor Patrick Said He Was “Staying Out Of Contested Primaries.” “When asked about whether he would endorse [Setti] Warren, Patrick hesitated and said, ‘I’m staying out of contested primaries.’” (“Governor Patrick Offers Careful Encouragement To Setti Warren’s Senate Bid,” The Boston Globe, 5/11/11)

In March 2011, Governor Patrick Said He Was Not Going To Campaign For Any Democratic Candidate Until They Won The Nomination. “The governor also said he would not campaign for any potential Democratic candidates until that candidates wins the party nomination.” (“Patrick Won’t Endorse Warren Or Other Potential Senate Candidates,” State House News Service, 3/2/11)

Patrick: “I’m Not Picking One, I’m Going To Support The Democratic Nominee.” (“Patrick Won’t Endorse Warren Or Other Potential Senate Candidates,” State House News Service, 3/2/11)

Doug Rubin, Former Patrick Adviser & Warren’s Top Political Consultant, Said The Governor Should Stay Neutral

In August 2011, Rubin Said It Was The “Right Course Of Action” For Governor Patrick To Stay Neutral In The Primary. BRAUDE: “Has [Governor Patrick] given you any indication that if [Elizabeth Warren] gets in the race that she would be his choice?” RUBIN: “My expectation is that the Governor’s going to stay neutral and support whoever the nominee is, and I think that’s the right course of action.” (NECN’s, “BroadSide,” 8/29/11)

RUBIN: “I Think There Are A Lot Of Quality Candidates Already In The Race Who Have Done Hard Work, And Built Their Organization, And Deserve Consideration.” (NECN’s, “BroadSide,” 8/29/11)

In June 2011, Rubin Said “A Clean, Hard-Fought Primary Will Strengthen The Party And Energize The Grass-Roots.” “The best thing for our state is for candidates who feel like they have a compelling reason to run for U.S. Senate to get in early, do the hard work at the grass-roots level and broaden the Democratic message and vision. A clean, hard-fought primary will strengthen the party and energize the grass-roots.” (Doug Rubin, Op-Ed, “D.C. Dems Are Hurting Chances To Beat Brown,” The Boston Herald, 6/6/11)

Rubin Cited Deval Patrick’s Upset Win Over The Establishment Favorite In The 2006 Gubernatorial Primary. “Contested primaries are viewed only as roadblocks that force ‘serious’ candidates chosen by the party to spend money early and take the focus off of attacking the Republicans. The problem? That thinking has not led to electoral success recently in Massachusetts. Deval Patrick emerged from a hard-fought primary in 2006, against a candidate favored by many party insiders, to end 16 years of Republican control of the Corner Office.” (Doug Rubin, Op-Ed, “D.C. Dems Are Hurting Chances To Beat Brown,” The Boston Herald, 6/6/11)
