Republicans Expose Illegal Use of State Agency Resources

BOSTON – Today, members of the Tank the Gas Tax Ballot Initiative filed an Ethics complaint asking for an investigation of the Department of Transportation (DOT) on the heels of obtaining an email sent by a DOT employee that reads: “Please see attached. As we gear up to make our push to defeat the gas…” In addition, the email further mentions that talking points against this initiative are provided.

This email appears to be in direct violation of the Conflict of Interest law by using public resources for campaign purposes.

Shortly after the receipt of this email, another email surfaced that was sent to The Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives from the general counsel of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, W. Stuart Loosemore, a registered lobbyist. Loosemore’s email shows the DOT is being used as the pro-gas tax campaign headquarters, with DOT Secretary Richard Davey as the chief spokesman. (Loosemore’s boss is none other than disgraced, ex-Lt. Gov Tim Murray. Coincidence?)

“Governor Deval Patrick needs to discipline DOT Secretary, Richard Davey. Directing employees to spend their day campaigning against or for any ballot initiative is unethical and likely illegal,” said MassGOP Chairman Kirsten Hughes. “With issues plaguing DTA, DPH, DCF and now DOT, this administration is crumbling around Governor Patrick due to a failure of leadership.”
